Can Selecting A Career In Science Help People &
The Environment?
Hundreds of thousands of technical
jobs are unfilled across our nation. In the next few years this number
will reach into the millions. This is a very important issue.
Please consider the following: with our current level of technological
advancement comes an unique new level of responsibility. Our natural
resources are limited and being depleted. Many technological
advancements are yet to be made regarding human welfare and the environment.
Medical conditions and starvation
remind us of the human welfare side of technology and energy prices remind
us of the need for alternative energy research. The knowledge to solve
the problems exists, but the people to do the research and development
are often not available.
Many of the things that we commonly
learn in school can act as the foundation for such careers. Reading
enables us to study any subject; math gives us the founding methods behind
the logic of technology; art and drafting provides the tools that allow
us to pursue our goals with creativity; and social studies and history
give us the direction to apply our efforts. Indeed all subjects open the
doors for us, providing we add the most vital element — imagination!!
The STRAC Robotic Wheelchair
is an example of technology being developed to help the human condition.
STRAC is a prototype designed for quadriplegics. It operates by eyebrow
and nostril movement. It was designed and built by MRISAR.
